{"id":620,"date":"2014-03-31T18:06:52","date_gmt":"2014-03-31T18:06:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wallstreetandkstreet.com\/?p=620"},"modified":"2014-03-31T18:06:52","modified_gmt":"2014-03-31T18:06:52","slug":"growth-stocks-what-the-big-money-likes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wallstreetandkstreet.com\/?p=620","title":{"rendered":"Growth Stocks: What the Big Money Likes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s instructive to review the holdings of the smart PM\u2019s at leading mutual fund houses\u2014T Rowe Price, Fidelity, Gamco and Vanguard.\u00a0 We looked at the top 10 holdings of 18 big-cap growth-oriented funds.\u00a0 Some themes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A favorite holding is the card processors, <b>Visa<\/b> and <b>MasterCard<\/b>.\u00a0 They look a bit too popular to be great stocks going forward, especially if there are new regulatory \/ technology hurdles.<\/li>\n<li>TROW is high on <b>Danaher<\/b>.\u00a0 But the mainstream industrials and transports names are not much in evidence; <b>United Technologies<\/b> is the most popular.\u00a0 Only one fund owns GE.\u00a0 Gamco likes<b> International Paper<\/b> as a dividend play.<\/li>\n<li>The funds also don\u2019t own many consumer cyclicals such as big retailers (M, WMT, COST, JWN) or apparel companies (NKE, VFC, etc.).\u00a0 An exception is the auto parts retailers, <b>AutoZone<\/b> and <b>O-Reilly<\/b>, which TROW likes a lot.\u00a0 This is a play on the Obama economy, where only the fabled 1% can afford a new car.<\/li>\n<li>The favorite tech names are <b>Google<\/b> and <b>Apple<\/b>, followed by <b>Microsoft<\/b> and <b>Qualcomm<\/b>.\u00a0 These PM\u2019s are not big fans of supposedly cheap old tech names such as ORCL, HPQ, IBM and CSCO.<\/li>\n<li><b>Gilead<\/b> is the favorite \u201cnew pharma\u201d name while <b>JNJ<\/b> is, by a sizeable margin, the favorite \u201cold pharma\u201d holding.<\/li>\n<li><b>Wells Fargo<\/b> and<b> U.S. Bancorp<\/b> are the most popular banks, followed by <b>BAC.<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0 Fido likes <b>Ameriprise<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>Some \u201csurprises\u201d \u2013 at least to me \u2013 include <b>Crown Castle<\/b>\u00a0 (wireless infrastructure), \u00a0<b>Acuity<\/b> <b>Brands<\/b> (lighting), and <b>Fiserv<\/b> (payment technology).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We know that smart, very well-informed investors like the fundamentals of the 20 stocks highlighted.\u00a0 I own 7 of them.\u00a0 But you have to decide for yourself whether some of them (perhaps V, MA, DHR, GOOG, GILD) are too popular.\u00a0 I am rather surprised these funds don\u2019t own more industrial names, which benefit from creating a cleaner, more energy efficient infrastructure, as discussed in my February 13, 2014 post.<\/p>\n<p><b>Un-natural Selection Leaves Skeletons in the \u201cValue\u201d Closet<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A challenge for \u201cValue investors:\u201d because Mr. Market is smart, \u201ccheap\u201d stocks are often cheap for a reason.\u00a0 In what might be called a process of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">un<\/span>natural selection, some big, dominant companies are mismanaged for so long that their corporate DNA is corrupted to the point where they are very difficult to turn around.<\/p>\n<p>Take GM and Citigroup&#8211;please.\u00a0 It turns out that GM knew about its defective ignitions for years without telling regulators; twelve motorists died.\u00a0\u00a0 On Friday GM did another giant recall.\u00a0 Not great for a tarnished brand in a hyper-competitive industry that is adding lots of new capacity. Meanwhile Citigroup managed to lose $400 million dealing with a shady bank in Mexico, and for the second time it failed its Fed stress test.\u00a0 I am guessing the Fed folks did not give Citi the benefit of the doubt, given its century-long history of egregious mismanagement and government bailouts.
